China Tour 2015: Pianos

Before I left for my China Tour 2015 I wasn't sure what to expect as far as instruments are concerned. I am so surprised by the variety and the quality of the instruments on the concert stages here in China! As a Steinway Artist I'm naturally drawn to Steinway instruments, which pretty much make me feel as if I'm playing my own pianos in the comfort of my own practice studio at home.

Also Bechstein has always been for me a piano brand that enables a great variety of sound, color, and articulation. However, with this brand the individual instruments differ a lot.

This lovely Bechstein concert grand was able to deliver inspiring color and tone palettes.

To my utter surprise there were several piano brands I haven't heard of, which sounded very good. Particularly impressive was the Hailun piano, a brand to watch as China's classical music world is growing exponentially.

What a pleasant surprise! The Hailun piano delivered beautiful color palettes and extremely reliable volume gradation. Bravo!

Another maker I had not heard of before was a Poligny piano, a solid instrument with reliable action but limited tonal range.

Good, not great. The Poligny instrument is a fine performance piano but perhaps not my first choice.

As to be expected the winner was the Hamburg Steinway. As mentioned above Steinway has always been my go-to instrument, this one here was in Shanghai:

THE WINNER: My favorite of the China Tour 2015 instruments, this German Steinway delivered on all levels to the maximum. Beautiful colors, clear tone, an inspiration all around. Bravo bravissimo!

China Tour 2015: Hospitality

Chinese culture prides itself in its hospitality. One aspect of this hospitality is the press and advertisement for each tour stop which is absolutely overwhelming. Big screen displays and banners are welcoming me at each concert venue. Particularly impressive are the beautifully designed program booklets and take home posters (btw. those are great for autographs). All of these things enrich the performance experience so very much, and it makes me want to play! Take a look at these samples and check back in for more about my China Tour 2015

China Tour 2015: Food

Since my arrival here for my China 2015 tour I have been able to sample an incredible array of foods all with an amazing variety of flavors, textures, and colors. I cannot believe how easy it was to simply start eating only Chinese food! Chopsticks are of course the way to go and I am enjoying it immensely to eat things that I've never seen, let alone tasted before! Since I am not able to post flavors I can at least post some images, even though it only re-creates about a tenth of the amazing culinary experiences here in Shanghai and all around Southern China.

Many dinners are presented on a glass 'lazy susan'.

A typical dinner setting with constant temptations floating by. The host does the spinning and keeps encouraging to sample dishes.

This one is for the adventurous gourmand.
